DIY Coffee Table out of a Chicken Crate / Coop

Have you ever had something in your “storage space” forever, knowing, someday, you would know exactly what to do with it?

That is the case with our DIY coffee table out of a chicken crate / coop.  I bought  the crate few years ago at a yard sale.  Actually, I didn’t buy it and then I obsessively went back hours later hoping it was still there!  Now that I think about it, there seems to be a pattern of that behavior.  Hmmm…

The coffee table we had on our screen porch before was just not the right scale.  So, with a quick clean up, a little bit of wax on the ends and a few simple steps, it is perfect out here now.

We simply added a piece of scrap wood (something we seem to have an endless supply of) and then attached casters.  Note, I went for the prettiest casters, not for ones that locked.  I wish I had picked out locking ones or held out for pretty ones that lock.  When I put my feet up, it rolls away.

We bought a piece of stock plexi glass at Home Depot along with special cutters.  We simply used the cutter with a large ruler and put it in place.  It is a little flimsy, but there is enough support in the crate that it works and we don’t have to worry about it breaking.  It also cleans up super easy with just spray cleaner.

I layered in some rope and shells, a small star shaped basket and called it a day.

And now, there is one less thing in our garage storage.

And speaking of our garage…we are in the middle of an EPIC purge of our garage and basement.   I think we are just in a different stage of our life and there is just too much stuff.  We are making room for a workshop in the garage and we are super excited about it.  A BIG yard sale is coming!

  1. Love it Laura….I so remember years ago when they were the rage and still are……saw them used as wonderful tables such as yours and great cabinets hung on the walls…I love this in your beautiful porch…just a perfect piece for the space…and so great that you had in your storage area just waiting for you to work your magic on it!….Love the vignette you always so beautifully do…have a great week!

  2. I hat to state the obvious, but why not change the casters? You seem unhappy with the non-locking ones, so make yourself feel better. I love the look of it, but I would be dissatisfied too.

  3. I have a coffee table just like this on my deck. My casters don’t lock either and it does tend to roll when I put my feet up.

  4. I can see changing out the inside seasonally. Maybe Spring/Easter for the spring and leaves/pumpkins or the like in the fall. I don’t know how cold it gets for you guys, but you could at least put Christmas stuff in it and see it outside through a window for Christmas.

Not that I sit outside in the summer, Texas is entirely too hot for me these days. Between the bugs and heat, I stay inside.

  5. Oh wow, what a neat idea. Then you can change things inside the chicken coop for the different seasons. I can see a string of white lights and adding some Christmas ornaments around the holidays.

OMG!! Love this idea, it looks great. Wish I could find a old wooden chicken coop somewhere cause I wood so do this for sure. It coould go in any decor, and would go really good in our house. Thanks for sharing this projects and all the other one that you have shared with us.

Hmmm, having seen chicken coops in action, so to speak, I hope it got more than a quick clean *somewhere* along the line. It looks very nice, but I’m kind of grossed out by the idea….

  8. Sooooo awesome! I want that…

  9. WOW just what I was looking for. Came here by searching for video
