Finding 10 Random Things

Lately, I have been sharing a whole lot of decorating ideas and projects and the like.

That is all good and fun, but today, I think I feel like being a bit random and fun, so here are 10 things I am finding…

I was driving in the car yesterday with my youngest and she said: “Mom, I think I am falling in love with characters in Farmer Boy.” (She is reading The Little House on the Prairie series).  Wow, could that be any more perfect.  I told her if I ever wrote a novel that is exactly what I would want someone to say about my book.  Then she said: “And it also makes me crave pie.  I love pie.”  Love that girl.  And she really does love pie.

She also has a reading plan.  She wants to finish The Little House series, then read The Secret Garden and then Little Women – in that order.  Oh, to be 10 has lots of challenges, but those are the type of plans I need to start implementing in my life.

I am beginning to wonder if I will ever be able to keep my bedroom clean.  Growing up, I was always punished for my bedroom being messy and if my Mom came by tonight, she would probably take away my iPhone.  I can keep the rest of the house in “working order”, but really can not get my act together in my bedroom.

It is also the one room I just can’t seem to happy with the decorating.  I am working on a plan, but mostly it involves ridiculous piles of stuff lying around waiting to be figured out.

Today, I did a presentation at our church’s parenting group meeting.   I use the term “presentation” quite loosely.  Mostly, I tried to hold the attention of a group of moms who were keeping one eye on their child and hear me over many children running amok.  I hope I shared some information that was helpful and didn’t waste their time.

This group started right about when my oldest daughter was born and was my saving grace – Wednesday mornings could not come fast enough.  To this day I am still have a special bond with those women and my children are still friends with those babies.  Well today, I felt like an alien!  I am so out of touch with the world of beautiful little toddlers and preschoolers.  I set my coffee down and quickly realized, thank goodness, that that was just asking for an accident.  I wasn’t even programmed to look down as I walked across the room anymore so as to not knock any sweet little ones over ( I didn’t by the way, in case you were wondering icon wink Finding 10 Random Things ).  How is that it wasn’t just yesterday that I was one of those moms?  And how is that we so quickly get out of that mode?

When I told my sister about the presentation she reminded me about the woman who spoke when I used to attend.  She explained that it was our job to make sure that we never had any dishes in the sink – at any time – just in case someone ever came to the door.  I was traumatized by that at the time – but when I recounted the memory to my husband, his response was “well, I guess you didn’t listen to her very well”.  Funny man.

No picture here, I didn’t want the moms to think I was the crazy stalker lady if I started taking pictures of their kids.  I saved the crazy lady part for later when I kept taking pictures of cheese at the deli with my phone.

I have fallen in love with Etsy once again.  Really, I love Etsy.  I actually ordered a bunch of stuff recently for an upcoming project that I am super excited about.  But the best part is the new app for Etsy is amazing – it makes searching for things so easy and fast!  You should definitely try it!

I hesitated, and this beauty sold.  I won’t even tell how cheap it was!  But the vendor has some other fun vintage items if you want to stop by.  The spot on the wall of the office is weeping right now.

I am trying to get back into a more regular routine of working out.  I have decided it would be so much easier for everyone if it just didn’t hurt so much.  No picture here either, there is nothing picture worthy about me working out.

I think that the grass is always greener at another hair length.  I was feeling like I liked the pictures of my hair shorter better – so yesterday, I cut about three inches.  Well not me, but you know what I mean.  Now, I look at pictures with my hair longer and I like that better.  The good part is my sister says I’m being ridiculous because you can’t even tell the difference.  Here is a picture with the longer hair.

I am so loving that my 12 year old is being super affectionate right now.  I am treasuring every minute because I know the teen years are just months away and I am really hoping that we are laying the groundwork for some success down the road – but I am also being realistic that there will be challenging times as well.

We just finished up with her sister’s school play and now hers is just a few weeks away.   She is in the chorus but she is super excited because she just found out she has a line and has a song where she gets to “swing her swooshy skirt”.  These are important things to a 12 year old.  Come to think of it – I might enjoy being able to “swing a swooshy skirt” at least once.

While helping out last week at my daughter’s play, I discovered a hidden talent.  I was the official mustache and beard artist.  Why do I always think there is an “o” in mustache?

I always assumed by the time I was in my forties I would have “me” figured out a whole lot more than I do.  But I don’t.  And I am working on being okay with that.  Be in the meantime, I love this reminder..

And yes, this too can be found on Etsy!

Oh, and a P.S. – after always centering my post, I think I am heading “to the left, to the left” – come on sing it!  I guess my way just isn’t proper.   I am not sure if I can stick with it, but I am trying it out!

Wishing you a day filled with being awesome!

About Finding Home

My name is Laura and I have been running a small interior decorating business since 2004. I have always had a love for decorating but I never fully realized it until about 10 years ago. I live in New York with my husband and two daughters. They support me and encourage me at every turn. I have always loved the “hunt” for the next treasure, especially when you have to get down and dirty to discover it. I feel like it is time to start taking my business in a new direction. I am not sure exactly what that will be, but this blog is about that journey. About finding a sense of home, a place where we belong and can most be ourselves. Thank you for being part of my journey.

  1. awesome right back at ya!! what a great post!

  2. I stumbled across your blog in December and have been reading it faithfully since. I was struck by your resemblance to an old friend of mine and our similarity in style and interests. My bedroom, too, is always a staging ground for another project….usually photo frames and mirrors that need to be hung. I also have a daughter that loves to read and has had her nose in Laura Ingalls Wilder since she could form words in her brilliant little mind. I also struggle to find time to “work out” which for me only includes long walks, usually with friends…no pain in my knees. I look forward to your posts every day and am inspired by your beautiful home and spirit. And my two cents…I love your hair shorter…it’s more carefree! Have a wonderful day!

I wouldn’t worry about the kitchen sink – who looks there. For me it is the clutter that piles up on the kitchen island I can deal with an oatmeal bowl in the sink but piles of mail and books drive me crazy. I have also wondered how we go so quickly from comfortable with babies and toddlers to feeling like a giant alien in the room. I gave up church nursery duty because I just don’t have the heart for it. I raised and loved every minute with our three kids but I am just now comfortable around babies and toddlers.

  4. Jeannie S says:

Thanks for sharing these words of wisdom Laura. Remember shorter hair ALWAYS makes you look younger!
Have an AWESOME day and enjoy your hair!

  5. Hi Laura! I just started reading your blog and I so enjoyed this post and getting to know you better! I identify with you on so many things…figuring out the master bedroom, the dishes in the sink and whether to the hair grow or cut it! On the upside, everything has a way of working itself out and next month it will be an entirely new list of 10 random things!!

Thanks so much for a fun post!

    XO,
    Jane

  6. Michelle says:

Oh I remember those days of toddlers and going to those Mom’s groups when my almost 15 yr old was little. We were in a new town, new neighborhood and I wanted to meet other mom’s. First time of staying home. A lot of these were first time mom’s, and much younger than I was even then. I already had a 10 yr old when my middle was born. For the record, then… my house was much cleaner! LOL I will be 45 this spring and am still trying to figure out who I am. Yes, do enjoying these times. Teens are hard! My middle used to be such a mama’s girl. Over the last year or two that has slowly disappeared. That is hard for this mama. I love your hair!! ;)

  7. How time flies with our children. We had been visiting our daughter for 2 weeks recently and our 2 wee grandsons are growing and learning and changing so fast. Don’t forget that your hair will grow back. I enjoyed this post today. I hope you have a blessed day and enjoy your beautiful girls. Pamela

  8. SuePreston says:

Thank you for your lovely post. Glad to read I’m not the only one with a messy bedroom. I take students in the year and the first are due to arrive. Almost everywhere is tidy apart from our bedroom! Guess we all feel like aliens from time to time.
    Sue

  9. Everything you own in the box to the left… :)

I have to reply to a few of these…I really enjoyed this post.

    1. I just adore that your daughter loves reading and has a plan. Every teacher loves to hear something like that.
    2. My bathroom is often looking something like a meth lab. We moved last summer and I promised myself to keep it clean. It isn’t happening and that’s probably ok.
    3. Love Etsy too.
    4. I’m thinking about doing Couch to 5K. Right now I can’t even run to the mailbox.
    5. I miss my kids being the age of your kids. Time flies! Our experience was that they continued to stay sweet and affectionate…for the most part.

  10. I just have to say this “new” vintage look is really hard for me, it makes me feel old! It is the stuff I grew up with around my house and it’s the stuff I would have looked over at a garage sale a few short years ago. If this stuff is vintage, am I??? I would add to your ” be awesome” sign to also be kind to yourself, we are so hard on ourselves as mama’s and women aren’t we? I like your daughter’s reading plan, I may join her?

  11. LOVE this post, Laura! I am right there with you on so many of these! Why is working out so painful? I’m working on getting my legs ready for a ski trip and there’s just no avoiding the painful “can’t walk up and down stairs much less go to the bathroom thing” – ugh! lol I remember those days of preschool moms groups and I’ve been in a bit of a mourning that my babies aren’t babies anymore but am so grateful I can have knick knacks on the coffee table and not be woken up at the crack of dawn anymore – yea! And, it’s good to know that other 40-somethings don’t have it all figured out either. I feel like I’m just now really getting to know myself! Have a great day and thanks for the fun post! :)

  12. Love this post, makes me want to be 10 again and sit and read books all day and wear a swishy skirt :) I won’t even mention the disgusting amount of dishes in my sink…

  13. Glad about your 10 random things…..but can we address the light fixture? I WANT IT! The nerve of them selling out!

Happy day to you my wonderful friend!
    karianne

  14. Amelia says:

it seems like playgroup was just a couple months ago! it does seem as the women from our playgroup have a special bond–we were “in the trenches” together, so to speak :)
    I enjoy the randomness
PS Farmer Boy is my FAVORITE Little House! :)

  15. That was a fun read..enjoy those girls and your hair and the imaginary vaca..and move to the left …..

  16. Oh my gosh Laura, I love this. You are me, I am you, wierd, lol. But I have th boy thing going on:). I love that you keep it real & I REALLY can’t keep my room neat either. See you tomorrow! Jen

  17. Lydia Miller says:

My question doesn’t really relate to this post. I came across your blog and noticed that you have a 36″ Wolf range; we are building and considering purchasing a 36″ Wolf. I would love any feedback that you could offer–good, bad, etc. Thank you!

  18. This post was so “refreshing”…I feel as if we were sitting down at the kitchen table just chatting about random things…your gathered thoughts of the day…chatting away over a cup of tea…loved it!
Have a wonderful weekend with your family Laura!

  19. I enjoy your blog so much! Love your daughter’s reading plan. I didn’t read the Little House books until my early twenties and fell in love with them. I so wanted a beau like Almanzo! Thank you for glumpses into your family life; they brighten up my day!

  20. Sheila says:

I just found your blog and I think you’re sweet and funny. I love your kitchen pictures too. I also wanted to tell you about a great series ( If you love the Little House on the Prairie Books) called Little Britches by Ralph Moody. I hope you enjoy them too.

  21. LOL I’ve always loved how you centered your writing….in fact I started doing more of my blog like that because of you and now it’s not proper?? Who told you that? :-) Hee,hee – I guess we can’t make everyone happy! Whatever you do will be great, but it IS funny how I loved your centering, just seemed so easy to read that way?????

  22. I love your post and can relate to everything! Reading everyone’s posts just shows how we women are so much alike and share the same heartaches, joys and ideas. I love being a woman!
