So, here it is – the close of day one of 2013.

Kind of like fresh, thick snow – clean and pretty, no flaws from the year before.

I know I should be writing about all of my plans and my resolutions for this year.

This time last year, I was in full blown planning mode.

There was a giant poster board and diagrams.  And then there were index cards broken down by month.

I am not exaggerating – I really did all that.

And a lot of the plans on the list were accomplished – not all, but a lot.

But this year, I will not be picking a “word” of the year, although I did love last year’s.

I love the idea, but nothing is really moving me.

There will be no poster board, no monthly index card lists.

Don’t misunderstand me.  I have goals, lots of goals.

And plans, lots of plans.

But this year, I am not feeling less of a need to create a strategy – and more of a need to do!

I find my to-do lists get long – and sometimes I spend so much time writing the lists when I could have spent the time crossing some things off.

Just tonight I did three things that took minutes.  They have been on my to-do list for over a month.

So there will be still be lists (mostly because my memory is terrible) – but the focus is going to be to DO.

I feel ready and excited to begin 2013 and all it has to hold.

I am ready for changes – even the scary ones.

I saw this, and thought it summed things up pretty well.

  1. Laura, Happy New Year! Your images are beautiful and so is there home and barn. I feel the same way and won’t be putting a lot of pressure in the planning phase- just doing it too! See you at Haven.

  2. First, your images were absolutely beautiful. As in VERY beautiful! Next, I pinned that same chalkboard. I loved the simplicity and the message. Third…you wrote exactly what I told myself these last few days. There is no word. There are no strategies…but just a “This is my year” kind of mentality. Go forth and conquer! Good luck. I SO enjoy your blog by the way. Lori Lucas

  3. Laura I couldn’t agree more. Lots of people talk (and write) about all the things they want to do but don’t actually DO much of them at all. I found a fitting quote on pinterest and recreated it for my home, it’s hanging right by the front door and my kids LOVE to recite it nearly every day as we’re going out:

Just thought I’d share, we’re in the same boat and I can’t wait to see all that you DO in 2013. Best wishes.

  4. No diagrams or posters here either!! Just gonna make it all along the way!! ;)

  5. Happy New Year. I love your new attitude and I actually did this last year. I spent 2011 with many plans and lists and deadlines and I was stressed about it all. Last year I decided to just go with what I felt and it worked so much better. I think I actually got more done but it was more joyous to me. So have fun in 2013. I plan to.

Very wise post today. Sometimes all the planning in the world can fall short. With determination, however, the will becomes a way. :-)

  7. Laura…..that home is out of a movie! A movie I totally want to be in! You made my heart sing today…..and I totally agree….waaaay better to just do than spend too much time planning!

You are SUCH a rock star :)

  8. Your pictures are beautiful — the word, “idyllic” comes to mind! I had to laugh a little when you talked about plans and lists can take time away from doing…so true! That definitely happens to me. Happy New Year!

  9. Wow, your in-laws sure have a gorgeous home! Like you, I’m not spending so much time planning and making goals for the New Year…I’m just plunging in and DOING!

  10. Beautiful words and pictures today! And that chalkboard!!! Pinned it~this year I’m going to spend more time just doing things on a wing and a prayer~anxious to see where He takes me! Happy New Year to you and your family!

  11. Laura, your photos are certainly beautiful. The old farmhouse is gorgeous and I love the snow on everything. It looks like here. ;) I haven’t chosen a word or goals this year. I’ll just take each day as it comes and see what it has to offer. I do hope to exercise more and curb my diet too but I hope that every year. :) Pamela

Happy & Blessed New Year Laura! Their home is breathtaking. This year I am choosing joy one day at a time. I’ve already messed up, but that’s the wonderful thing about God, His mercies are new every morning!

  16. Happy New Year, Laura!
Goals written or not your sharings are always an endless source of inspiration to me. Your home and surroundings looks straight from a book – lovely and whimsical – it would seem a waste to be writing lists and not enjoying it and sharing its beauty, doesn’t it?! ;)
    Thank you!

  17. I’m with you, I’m just going to do. I still love notes on small bits of paper so that will not change but I will indeed DO more. The photos are so lovely!
    Happy day.

  18. Beautiful Photography! I am in an organization and get-it-done mood too! Loved my inspirational stop here!

  19. Hi Laura – Beautiful images and an inspiring message as well! I’m not an exceptionally organized person, hardly ever a list-maker and I very seldom make New Year’s resolutions, yet I seem to accomplish most of what I want to do in my own time. My goal for the new year I guess will be to not “sweat the small stuff” and to take one day at a time. I love your description of the new year as being like fresh, thick snow, “clean and pretty, no flaws from the year before.” You’re exactly right, the new year comes to us clean and it will be what we make of it. I’m sure I’ll be a frequent visitor here in the coming year, you’re always such an inspiration! Til next time….take care. :)
